People often ask me where the name A L B A came from, but the story of A L B A is about far more than a name. It is about building something that represents a belief, a standard and a vision for what Jiu Jitsu can be.
For most of my life, Jiu Jitsu has been at the centre of everything I do. It has taught me discipline, resilience, humility and the value of consistent hard work. Through competition, coaching and years spent on the mats, I developed a clear understanding of what makes a great academy. More importantly, I learned what kind of environment helps people grow, not just as athletes, but as people.
When the opportunity came to create something of my own, I knew I wanted it to stand for more than medals and success in competition. I wanted to build a community where everyone could thrive. A place where children could develop confidence and life skills. A place where adults could challenge themselves, improve their health and find a sense of belonging. A place where competitors could pursue excellence while remaining part of a supportive team.
That vision became A L B A.
The word “Alba” means dawn, sunrise and a new beginning. From the very beginning, that meaning resonated deeply with me. Every time someone steps onto the mats, they are given a fresh opportunity to improve. Every class is a chance to learn, grow and become a better version of themselves than they were yesterday.
What started as a vision has grown into a thriving community across multiple academies. Thousands of students have stepped onto our mats, each bringing their own goals, challenges and aspirations. Some arrive looking to compete at the highest level. Others want to improve their fitness, build confidence or simply try something new. Regardless of where they start, every member becomes part of the same journey.
One of the principles I have always believed in is leading by example. Our coaches train. They compete. They continue learning. They hold themselves to the same standards that we ask of our students. Excellence is not something we talk about; it is something we pursue every day.
I am incredibly proud of what A L B A has become, but I believe we are only at the beginning. The mission remains the same as it was on day one: to create the best possible environment for people to learn Jiu Jitsu, develop character and become part of something bigger than themselves.
A L B A was built on the idea of new beginnings.
Every class.
Every challenge.
Every opportunity to improve.
That journey continues every day.
